Residents are entitled to one free hard waste collection per financial year.
Your hard waste collection entitlement is 2 cubic metres – 2 metres long x 1 metre high x 1 metre wide. In feet this equates to 6ft x 3ft x 3ft.
Additional collections can be booked and cost $106.40 per collection; plus $25.60 each for mattresses/bed bases, & $30.40 per extra fridge/freezer. Collection to be paid by credit card over the phone.
Do not place any waste out until your booking is confirmed.
You will be posted a brochure, and a sticker to put on your hard waste. If you have a PO box or a different mailing address, please include it in the Special Instructions.
Please book your collection ASAP and note there may be an extended wait for your hard rubbish to be collected.

You should receive a confirmation email immediately after booking outlining your collection week, when and where
to place out the waste, the acceptable and unacceptable waste and the amount of waste that can be placed out.

Hard waste
Nillumbik residential ratepayers receive one free hard waste collection each financial year. It can be up to two cubic metres which is 1m wide x 1m high x 2m long.
Two cubic metres is:
two double mattresses
one double mattress and an additional one cubic metre of material
one stove, one fridge, two paint tins
one stove, one chair, one roll of carpet
one fridge, one chair, 10 pieces of bundled and tied timber
Items placed on the nature strip without a booking are considered as illegal dumping and may result in a fine.
Booking instructions
Bookings will be confirmed by email directly after booking is placed. A confirmation SMS will be sent the weekend before your collection is to take place
Neatly place items on the nature strip the weekend before the collection week (by 6am Monday morning for collection during that week)
Items should be no heavier than two people can lift and less than 1.5m in length
Place no more than two cubic metres of items on your nature strip, excess will be left behind
Unaccepted items will not be collected – please check the listing below of what will and will not be collected
If you are unable to place your waste on the nature strip, make a note in the ‘special instructions’ section of the booking form
Items placed on the nature strip without a booking are considered as illegal dumping and may result in a fine.
Do not leave any items of value near hard waste piles as these will be deemed as hard waste and if taken, no compensation will be given.
What Items can I put out ? We will COLLECT
Household furniture
Up to two mattresses and/or bed bases
Electronic appliances (any item with a plug, battery or cord. All batteries must be removed)
Whitegoods including washing machines, dishwashers and stoves
Fridges (doors removed)
Ceramics and crockery (wrapped and labelled)
Sheet glass (up to 1.5m) securely wrapped in either cardboard or bubble wrap and CLEARLY labelled Glass. Table tops need to be removed from their frame prior to wrapping
Up to 10 pieces of timber (no longer than 1.5 metres)
Carpet rolled and tied (maximum of one roll no longer than 1.5 metres)
Hot water systems and lawn mowers
Scrap metal items including guttering and window frames
Old tools
Small car parts (no springs and less than 55kg)
Empty paint tins with lids removed
Most materials collected will be recycled or reused where possible.
We will NOT COLLECT
Tyres
Batteries of any type
Motor oil and engine blocks
Garden waste
Clay, sand or soil
Household waste or recyclables
Building and renovation materials including rubble, bricks or cement
Fence panels or pallets
Asbestos and other hazardous waste
Gas cylinders
Liquids including chemicals, paint, oil and garden sprays
Bean bags, polystyrene or foam
Waste from commercial or industrial properties
Items may be collected by multiple trucks. To save space and keep costs to a minimum, bulky items are compacted in the trucks. Most items are recycled or reused where possible. All items are taken to the Knox Transfer Station for sorting and recycling. Items that are reusable are sold at the Recycled Goods Store.
